History of the Steel Bridge Songfest
In 1996, Sturgeon Bay’s Michigan Street Bridge was on schedule to be demolished. A grassroots band called “The SOBs” (Save Our Bridge) was locally organized to save the bridge from its demise. Their goal was accomplished! In 2005, this small group transformed into Citizens For Our Bridge, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the bridge through community outreach and education. They do this through several creative musical events and projects, including the Steel Bridge Songfest.
Since the first songfest, musicians from around the world have traveled to Door County to show their support, including Jackson Browne, James McMurtry, and Jane Wiedlin from the Go-Gos. The steel bridge has also been permanently protected and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Although the bridge is officially saved, the celebration continues to honor the bridge as a living symbol of creative collaboration.
What to Expect at the Steel Bridge Songfest 2017
This June 8th-11th, Door County will come alive with “music so fresh, it hasn’t been written yet!” You’ll hear a huge selection of songs written and recorded at Holiday Music Motel while enjoying a variety of live performances. The event takes place at several locations throughout Sturgeon Bay, so be sure to bring a Venue Map along with you! After the celebration, you’ll even have the opportunity to listen to your favorite songs all over again by purchasing the Steel Bridge Songfest album.
Artists and bands from all over the nation come to play their music just for you, many of which they have yet to release to the public.
