History of the Northern Sky Theater

Located in Peninsula State Park, the Northern Sky Theater has told stories about some of America’s most interesting people since 1970. It all began when a Madison, WI professor by the name of Dave Peterson went camping in the park. During his visit, he discovered a pine-rimmed theater with a tree vaulting through one side of the stage. He learned the theater was mainly used for nature programs and the occasional slide show.

Feeling inspired by what he saw, Peterson put together a small cast of 18 singers and instrumentalists to perform an epic that some of his own students had written called “Song of the Inland Seas.” They performed the show for two weeks during the summer of 1970, and it immediately became a huge hit. During the next 20 years, the same cast and crew performed original plays covering many aspects of Midwestern lore. The ensemble eventually began to grow as the theater became more popular. Some of the actors who joined the troupe became household names such as Fred Alley, Jeff Herbst, and James Kaplan.

After many years of success, the founders of the Northern Sky Theater have shared their secret. It’s the ability for everyone to work together and share the same vision for telling stories about America’s history. Although most of the troupe spends their time writing and performing for other theaters during the off-season, the summer season at Northern Sky Theater is usually the highlight of their year! They look forward to telling more fascinating tales for you this year.
